Cookies are used by online stores to keep track of the products consumers have previously viewed. This enables them to recommend more things customers might like. It can also keep products in customers’ shopping carts while browsing other websites.

Cookies in the online world can be divided into session cookies, persistent cookies, and third-party cookies.

• Session cookies

• Persistent cookies

Even though many persistent cookies have an expiration date and are immediately deleted when the expiration date comes, persistent cookies can stay on a computer eternally. Persistent cookies are used for two main reasons: authentication and tracking. These cookies monitor who is logged in under what name. They also simplify login information. Thus, consumers can autofill passwords without remembering site passwords. These cookies also track recurrent visits to the same website or page over time.

• Third-party cookies

Placed by websites other than the one you are now visiting. They are kept on a domain other than the one you are presently on. Their primary purpose is to follow consumers as they navigate between websites and show more relevant adverts.
